Professional Hygiene

Professional cleaning allows you to get rid of tartar and plaque, restoring your teeth to their natural natural color.

Hygiene appointments are not a luxury, but a necessary procedure. The fact is that dark plaque gradually appears on the teeth. It is impossible to remove it with a toothbrush - it fits too tightly, and it is removed exclusively in the dental chair. If you neglect professional hygiene, then over time, the likelihood of tooth decay and gum disease is high.

Prevent Oral Cancer

When you have a dental hygiene appointment, Dr. Gunitskiy will also screen you for oral cancer. Oral cancer is highly curable if detected early.  Dr. Gunitskiy and his team will give you advice on risk factors for oral cancer and how to reduce them. Risk factors include smoking, alcohol and infection with Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).

Confidence in Your Smile

If your mouth feels clean, it makes you feel good.  If you feel your teeth are whiter or less stained, you feel confident to smile. The feeling of fresher breath makes us more comfortable when talking with people.

Detect Other Dental Problems

If you haven’t seen your dentist recently, Dr. Gunitskiy and his team will be able to pick up on problems such as early decay, defective fillings or infections that you would have been otherwise unaware of.

Cleaning Those Hard To Reach Spots

It doesn’t matter how much and how well you brush and floss, or how much money you have just spent on the latest electric toothbrush, there will still be parts of your mouth that you just won’t be able to clean as effectively as a hygienist. A hygienist has instruments with just about every shape imaginable and the training to know exactly where the hidden tartar and plaque will be.

Dental Education

Dr. Gunitskiy and his team are expertly trained to advise you about the most up to date information on oral care, tooth brushing and ways to minimize your risk of dental problems.

Hygiene FAQs

Why is visiting the hygienist So important?

Dr. Gunitskiy strongly believes that prevention is the best possible solution. Good dental hygiene and gum health is the foundation of all healthy mouths. Hygiene appointments are also very important since they give the dentist the opportunity to take x-rays and screen your teeth for any cavities, oral cancer and other diseases. Many people think of visiting the hygienist as just cosmetic but it is so much more important than that.

What does a cleaning appointment involve?

The hygienist will usually use specially designed scalers to make sure all the tartar around each and every tooth is completely removed. If a patient is experiencing high amounts of tartar buildup, the hygienist might decide to clean using an ultrasound scaler, also known in the hygiene world as the Cavitron. The Cavitron vibrates at a high frequency further facilitating the removal of hard tartar. At the end of the appointment, the hygienist will brush your teeth with special pastes and brushes. This procedure will help polish your teeth and give them a natural shine. It also helps protect plaque from accumulating on your teeth. For higher risk patients or children, once the plaque is removed, the patient is recommended a fluoride treatment, which a special composition enriched with fluoride is applied to the teeth that helps strengthen them and protect against caries. At the end of every appointment the hygienist will floss your teeth and will provide a little bag for you take home with a toothbrush, floss, and a toothpaste.

How to prevents gum disease?

Gum disease (periodontitis) causes bleeding gums, painful gums, bad breath and loose teeth. Gum disease can be treated, stopped and even reversed if caught in it’s early stages. Dr. Gunitskiy and his team will not only treat and prevent gum disease, but will give you the means to prevent it yourself at home with a more effective oral hygiene routine.

how to prevent bad breath?

How to have a whiter smile?

External stain that builds on your teeth cannot be removed by brushing alone. This stain is often the result of tea, coffee, tobacco, red wine or other dietary factors.  Visits to the hygienists will remove these build-ups of stains and restore your teeth to their natural whiteness

How to stop bleeding gums?

Bleeding gums or seeing blood when you spit after brushing is a sign of gum inflammation. This can be an early sign of gum disease. If caught early, it is usually reversible. The bleeding is stopped by the hygienist thoroughly cleaning hard deposits off your teeth and around your gums, then showing you how to prevent it from building up in the future.

What is a flouride varnish application?

A special Gel or Varnish can be applied to your teeth to help keep them strong and even sometimes reverse damaging decay.

Can I lose teeth because of gum disease?

Gum disease is the number one cause for an adult patient losing a tooth. When teeth become extremely loose in the later stages of gum disease, they can become painful or acutely infected.  Often this leaves no other option, but to remove the tooth. Sometimes teeth can become so loose, that they fall out on their own. It is the hygienist’s number one mission to prevent this from happening by treating and preventing gum disease.
